  1. Jesus c. was a Hebrew preacher on whose 
  2. teachings Christianity was founded. According 
  3. to the accounts of his life in the four 
  4. Gospels, he was born in Bethlehem, Palestine, 
  5. son of God and the Virgin Mary, and brought 
  6. up by Mary and her husband Joseph as a 
  7. carpenter in Nazareth. After adult baptism, 
  8. he gathered 12 disciples, but his preaching 
  9. antagonized the Roman authorities and he was 
  10. executed by crucifixion.
